Shipping containers Ballina

The mouth of the Richmond, the largest coastal market on our run, and the postcode where more people buy a container sight unseen than anywhere else we deliver. It is also where salt and sand quietly decide which grade you should have bought.

§ 01

The jobs a container does at Ballina

The bulk of the work at Ballina is trade and site storage across the industrial land off Southern Cross Drive and Boeing Avenue, marine and boat gear near the river and the boat harbour, holiday and rental property storage through Lennox Head and East Ballina, contractor storage around the airport and highway works, and household storage during the constant renovation churn through the older beachside streets. The starting point never moves: what you are storing, how long for, and what the approach looks like. Everything else falls out of those three answers.

The grade question matters more than the size question. Cargo-worthy units are checked wind and watertight; as-is units are not sold watertight at all. Photographs of the container itself are available on request and sent before delivery.

§ 02

Salt, and why the cheap unit is not always the cheap unit

There is one piece of advice that matters more in this postcode than anywhere else on our run, and it is about grade rather than size. From Ballina round through Lennox and East Ballina you are in constant salt air, and salt finds any bare metal. A scratch through the paint on a used unit will show rust inside a season here, where the same unit at Casino would sit for years looking much the same.

That does not make a used container the wrong buy. It makes an as-is container a considered buy rather than a bargain. As-is units are cheaper and are not sold watertight — a patched repair, a soft floor section or a door seal that no longer seats — and on a coastal block those existing weak points get worse faster.

The practical version: if it is going near the water and it needs to keep rain off what is inside, buy cargo-worthy or new. If it is a workshop for a mower and some fencing wire on a block three streets back, as-is is honest value and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with the unit before you buy it.

§ 03

Sand, and what it does to a delivery

Sand is the Ballina delivery problem that people do not think to mention, because it does not look like a problem. A sandy lawn or a sandy driveway carries a car without complaint and behaves quite differently under a loaded truck, or under the four small pads a sidelifter stands on.

The failure is that a wheel or a pad sinks, the vehicle is out of level, and the driver correctly declines to place a container from that position. That is a wasted trip for both of us, and it is entirely avoidable with one sentence on the phone.

So mention it. Sandy ground is not a refusal — it is a reason to bring a different vehicle, to lay a couple of steel plates or sleepers, or to place the container closer to the hard surface than you had planned. All of that is easy to organise in advance and impossible to organise on the day.

§ 04

The industrial land and the airport end

A large share of Ballina's container work is straightforwardly commercial. The industrial estate off Southern Cross Drive and Boeing Avenue, the businesses around the airport, the marine trades near the river. Wide gates, hardstand, and people who already know what a truck needs.

That end of town is also where most of our Ballina hire goes. A business that needs lockable overflow storage for eight months while a fit-out runs, or a contractor with a defined-term compliance schedule that specifies secure and in some cases bunded storage before work starts. Hire from $27 a week ex GST for a 20ft, plus cartage in and out, and we quote the whole thing rather than the headline rate.

Lennox Head is close enough to be part of the same run and different enough to warrant a mention: tighter streets, more residential, and the same sand question.

§ 05

The Ballina access question

Ballina divides cleanly into the easy half and the interesting half. The industrial land off Southern Cross Drive, the newer estates through Cumbalum and Skennars Head, and the flat approaches around the airport are close to ideal — wide entries, level hardstand, and room for a truck to line up and swing. The older streets near the water are the opposite: narrow frontages, cars both sides, established Norfolk pines and figs over the road, and low services on timber poles. The third factor, and the one that catches people, is sand. Anywhere near the beach and through a good deal of the flat ground behind it, the surface looks entirely firm and gives way under a concentrated load — which matters most when a sidelifter is trying to stand on four pads to place a 40ft, or when a tilt-tray reverses onto what looks like solid lawn. If the ground is sandy, tell us, because it changes the vehicle rather than the price.

Whatever the address, the same three checks apply: bearing, approach and clearance. If one of them is marginal we settle the vehicle before quoting rather than discover it on the day — there is more in getting a container onto your block.

§ 06

Ballina — common questions

Does salt air really affect a container in Ballina?
Yes, noticeably. Constant salt air attacks any exposed metal, so a chip or scratch that would sit harmlessly for years inland will show rust within a season near the water. It is the main reason we suggest cargo-worthy or new for coastal blocks where the contents have to stay dry, and it is worth touching up damage rather than leaving it.
My yard is sandy — is that a problem for delivery?
It is a factor rather than a problem, but only if you tell us. Sand carries a car and does not always carry a loaded truck or the four pads a sidelifter stands on. Mention it when you ring and we will either bring a different vehicle, bring plates, or place the container nearer the hard surface. Discovered on the day it becomes a wasted trip.
Can you deliver to Lennox Head and Wollongbar too?
Yes — both are on the same run and quoted the same way, with cartage in the container price rather than billed afterwards. Lennox brings tighter residential streets and the same sandy ground question; Wollongbar is up on the plateau with red soil and generally easier access.
